Who Started the First Zoo?
Zoo is the short form of zoological garden, a place where animals are kept, fed, bred, studied and exhibited.
There has been evidence that there were zoos in ancient Egypt. Even the emperors of China had their own zoo, about 3000 years back. They were more like private gardens where animals, birds and fish were kept.
The first public zoo was set up in Paris in which were housed animals, a museum and a botanical garden. The next zoo was opened in 1829 in Regent’s Park, London. One of the best zoos containing more than 2000 different species of animals came up in Berlin in 1844.
What Is an Aqualung?
Aqualung is a diving equipment strapped to the back of a diver to enable him to breathe under water. It consists of a metal tank full of compressed air which passes through a pipe to the mouthpiece. A valve controls the flow of the air. Also called scuba equipment, an aqualung enables the diver to remain under water for up to an hour. This equipment enables the diver to have greater mobility and range in the deep waters. The first aqualung was successfully tested by Jacques Coustean in 1943.
What are Blood Platelets?
Blood platelets or thrombocytes are small disc-shaped cells found in the blood. Their number reaches up to 400,000 per cubic millimetre of blood. They help the blood to clot so as to prevent loss of blood. This helps the wounds to heal quickly.
